George’s pots, plates, jugs, bowls, vases, and jars are beautiful and expertly constructed, and the way he uses texture and glazes would blow the mind of any caveman. As he says “So far, so good,” and we agree wholeheartedly! The name implies a certain primitive and ancient aesthetic-and we would say that’s accurate…if by “primitive” you mean simple, earthy elegance and by “ancient” you mean timeless and traditional. It is stock characters with stock acting.George Hakkila is an award-winning ceramic sculptor who decided to work on some ideas he had for pottery, and started Pterodactyl Pottery as a way of pushing himself further. Critters are also color-coded - Orange and yellow ones are Legendary, purple and blue ones are Rare, green are Uncommon and red are Common. Dee Wallace (who appeared in the original film) brings the “fame” to the movie, but everyone stumbles through the picture like a bad Afternoon Special. There are 180 critters in total to catch, and like other collectibles there are different ones available in different seasons.

While you pretty much tune into Critters for the Critters and not the actors, the cast of this movie is exceedingly difficult to watch. Halloween critters have no rarity tags and come in nine types: three ground, three scuttle, and three flying critters. The logic of the movie doesn’t even seem right with this college town that apparently is so isolated that you need a satellite phone to reach civilization if something happens to regular phones and cell phones (plus, the size of the town with a gated college community seems questionable). There is no urgency and the comedy is more about how bad the story is delivered.
The movie sometimes has the right tone, but the pacing and script is awful. The franchised died on straight-to-VHS releases, but 2019 showed a resurgence of Critters with Critters: A New Binge on Shudder and Critters Attacks!…but the fun of the original movie is lost. It was low-budget, goofy, and by no means high art.

I also caught a backpack full of 'regular' critters to see if any fall critters would show up, to no avail. I have played several times today (Im in Europe), and not a one.
